Some would say its from the sublime to the ridiculous, but it was actually more about one part of the vineyard to the next.
This morning I shared in worship (4 hours of it) with friends from our local black pentecostal church. The Redeemed Christian Church of God meet in the community centre and they are a lively bunch. Mainly a black church and I was one of the very few white faces.
Of the other couple of white faces, one particular couple and I got chatting over the lovely chicken and rice after the service. It was obviously their first time in church…in fact, they recounted that having spoken to someone from that church yesterday in the supermarket and they were then surprised when that same church member turned up at their door this morning with a suit for the chap to wear so he could come to church! Interesting technique! I hope he gets to keep the suit.
Anyway, we got talking and it was just sobering to hear the story of where they are at in life right now and how they got there…combination of drugs, being in the wrong place at the wrong time and having to make a quick departure. They are living in a flat with no furniture or carpets with their pre-school child. Hopefully I can sort em out with some furniture and things this week. The bloke was saying that he hasn’t really though much about God until now but seeing how their son has come through to health after a worrying start to life has just opened their eyes.
Afterwards, it was good to have a chat with the pastor and we had a chat about reaching Torry with the gospel. Tis what its about.
Jesus exclaims to all who heard him that day “the Spirit of the Lord has annointed me to preach Good News to the poor…” (cf Luke 4, Isaiah 61). Jesus is still in the business and invites us to join him. Please accept.
